2025 marked a remarkable milestone for the East End Medical Centre in Plaistow, which is proudly celebrating 40 years of service to the local community. The practice’s journey is one of resilience, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to patient-centred care, values that remain at the heart of the surgery today.
The story begins in 1985, when Dr Ila Basu, after being dismissed from her former practice for being pregnant, refused to let adversity define her future. Instead, she transformed a small shop front into what would become East End Medical Centre. With only one receptionist and 100 patients, she worked tirelessly — seven days a week — often with her young child beside her. Her determination and courage laid the foundation for a surgery that would grow to become a trusted pillar of health care in Newham.
As the practice list grew, Dr. Basu’s husband, Dr. Suniti Basu, joined her. Together, they faced formidable challenges from the health authority to find a new, adequate premises. After two years of persistent advocacy, battling planning denials, and eventually appealing directly to Newham Council, the Basu’s successfully secured funding to build the modern surgery. As Dr. Ila Basu said: “discrimination will always be there… but it is my experience that if you are honest, sincere and devoted to your work, nothing can stop you from achieving your goal!”
Beyond the physical building, it was the Basu’s exemplary approach to medicine—marked by kindness, empathy, and deep respect for each patient—that shaped the soul of the practice. This legacy of compassionate care continues to guide the team today.
The surgery now thrives under the leadership of its two partners, Dr. Uma Basu (daughter of the founders) and Dr. Kenneth Anochie. Their partnership combines experience, compassion, and a shared vision for the future of primary care.
The practice’s backbone is its long-standing staff, including former Practice Manager Jennifer Alveres and much-loved admin staff Pravina Dattini, who has served the practice for 35 years and have offered stability and continuity for decades. The practice’s current manager, Heena Shaikh has more recently strengthened the management team with her drive for efficiency and patient-centred improvements. Altogether, the team remains committed to delivering high-quality, personal, patient-focused care — even as general practice across the country faces mounting pressures.
To mark this special anniversary, a celebration event was held on 26/11/25, bringing together staff, patients, and friends of the practice. It was a warm and heartfelt occasion, filled with shared memories, photographs from the practice’s early days, and an opportunity to honour the Basu’s remarkable legacy.
Long-standing patients Mr. and Mrs. Barnard shared a touching message: “It’s nice to see that the surgery is still working on the same ethics as it always has, with the same care for all of us patients, for which we thank you all.”
As East End Medical Centre looks ahead, it does so with pride in its history and confidence in its future. The legacy built by the Basu’s continues to
